Gluten Free Bisquick Review and Prize Pack Giveaway

I was recently given the opportunity to sample the new Bisquick Gluten-Free Baking Mix.

I received a “Prize Pack” from General Mills through MyBlogSpark that included one box of the new Bisquick Gluten-Free Baking Mix, a cute little griddle with silver-dollar sized wells for making mini-pancakes, a pancake batter “pen” to make designs or initials on the pancakes, and a spatula. What fun!

First I made half a batch of pancakes using a non-stick skillet, since this is what I use when making pancakes for my family. I followed the directions on the box, which required adding egg, oil and milk.

The pancakes were evaluated by my family with the conclusion that they were OK. Not great, and not as good as the gluten free pancakes I usually make, but OK. They looked good, but were kind of stiff and didn’t have much flavor. On to the biscuits.

I made a full batch of biscuits with the remaining mix and served them with our evening meal. The biscuits required that I cut in shortening, then mix in eggs and milk. They were deemed OK by my family. These biscuits were kind of crumbly, but overall were better than the pancakes. These would be an OK addition to our meals, not great, but OK.

Would I purchase this product as-is? Probably not.

The main reason I would not buy this product is that, unlike the regular Bisquick, the shortening isn’t already in the mix. For me, this is part of why Bisquick is so convenient. If I’m going to measure and cut in shortening, I might as well just make biscuits from scratch. If the shortening were already in the mix, I probably would buy this mix for the convenience of being able to whip up a quick batch of gluten free biscuits.

I would also prefer that it contained some whole grain flour for increased nutrition and flavor. And a bigger box would be good too. Gluten free flours tend to be more expensive than regular wheat flour, so they might have been targeting a particular “price point” when determining package size, but I’m cooking for a family and that little box doesn’t go very far.

Still, it was worth trying, and I appreciate General Mills adding some gluten-free products to their line of mixes. OK, and the fun gifts in the pack from MyBlogSpark helped make it worth my while.

  18. I like the GF Bisquick and use it often. I never make "plain" pancakes now that I have to do them GF but with mini-chocolate chips these are a hit in my house!

  19. I have used this mix to make waffles and my son loves them. I've never made pancakes or biscuits with this mix, and I don't think I would after reading your review. Waffles come out perfectly, nice and crispy. I think letting the mixed batter sit awhile helps.
